VEG 99: A city in change
On Thursday evening 17 October, Fran Bradshaw, one of the founders of the Matrix Feminist Design Co-operative will give a lecture at the Van Eesteren Museum. The British collective was particularly active in the 1980s and was one of the first female architectural organisations to explore a feminist approach to urban design.
Matrix believed that the city was designed by men and thus did not take into account specific situations in which women found themselves. Dark bicycle tunnels through which women dared not cycle at night. Awkward staircases where it was difficult to manoeuvre prams. The collective very practically went into different neighbourhoods to make concrete adjustments for better use of the city.
In the lecture, Bradshaw will talk about the history of the Matrix, working methods and examples. We will also discuss how these methods can be applied in New West. What changes can be made in Nieuw-West, to make the city more woman-friendly and accessible?
