Play Good by Architects: The Toy by Charles & Ray Eames
Charles Eames studied architecture in St. Louis in the United States of America, he was expelled after pleading about the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his interest in modern architecture was not appreciated. Shortly thereafter, he met American artist, designer, architect, and film director Ray Kaiser, whom he married in 1941. Together, the duo would become one of the most celebrated designers of the 20th century.
Also for adults
The Eames embraced the idea of play as an end in itself, the idea that creativity should be unfettered and not competitive. Based on that philosophy, in 1951, they designed The Toy, a colorful and cleverly thought-out product for both children and adults. It consists of a package of four square and four triangular, colorful vinyl panels, along with wooden dowels and connecting wires. The instructions provide ideas, tips and inspiration for what someone can do with the parts, but don't tell them what to do with them.
Unlimited possibilities
The Toy has almost unlimited uses. It's perfect for building tunnels, towers, houses, and tents. You can use it as a theater setting for a show, as a party decoration, as a shade from the sun or even as an airplane! The label on the outside of the package says: “Large. Colourful. Easy to assemble To create a light, bright expandable world that's big enough to play in and around. The Toy was produced until 1959. In 2017, Eames Office (US) returned The Toy to production.
